Policies for improving manure management efficiency

Farm manure is a valuable resource for supplying nutrients, especially for organic agriculture, and contribute to maintain soil fertility. At the same time, there is a risk of overuse of manure in animal-dense areas. A redistribution of manure to areas with a lower animal density could help to reduce the risk of nutrient leakage, improve the conditions for organic agriculture and partly replace mineral fertilizers in conventional agriculture.

In this study the use of farm manure is discussed from a socio-economic perspective in order to analyse whether there is a need for policy instruments to promote a more efficient use of manure.

The project will be finalized in spring 2020.
