Global warming affects marine ecosystems and changes e.g. the species composition. This will not only affect the fishing sector but also fish processing by changing the availability of traditional species on the market. This project analyses the European fish processing industry in a climate perspective through 25 case studies.
AgriFood contributes with a case on the Swedish processing industry for Baltic Cod. Currently, the processing is very limited but historical events will provide insights in how a processing industry deals with changes in both volumes and quality of the raw material that are due to environmental issues. Examples from the Baltic include eutrophication, over-fishing and reduced fish sizes. The study combines a literature review with historical trends on trade with cod products as well as the economic development of the processing industry. The project is financed by the European Commission and will end in autumn 2022.
