Sustainability labeling – opportunities and difficulties

The EU's Farm to Fork strategy aims, among other things, to promote healthy and sustainable food choices. As a step towards achieving this, the strategy advocates better information to consumers. The European Commission therefore intends to create a framework at EU level for sustainability labeling of food products. The framework will account for several aspects of sustainability (such as environmental, climatic, nutritional and social aspects). Already today, there are labeling schemes that combine different aspects of sustainability. In this project, we will describe two sustainability labels available on the French market, Eco-score and Planet-score, which combine different aspects of environmental and climate impact. We also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of creating a sustainability label that includes several aspects of sustainability.

The project is expected to be completed in spring 2023.
