The movement of people from rural areas to cities has long been viewed as a challenge from the perspective of the countryside. Often, it is the young who move to cities pursue education and to take advantage of the higher salaries offered there. But there are also people who move from the cities out to the countryside.
We examine how the migration from Swedish cities has looked over the past 15-year period. Among other things, we will shed light on how migration looked during the Covid-19 pandemic. We then define different types of rural areas (such as rural areas near cities or sparsely populated areas) to see if different types of rural areas have different migration patterns.
Then we will investigate whether moving to the countryside results in individuals achieving a higher standard of housing. Finally, we will also investigate what characterizes the individuals who move to the countryside. How old are they? What level of education do they have?
Data comes from Statistics Sweden (SCB) and covers the years 2007-2021.
The project is expected to be completed by 2024.
