Many actors in the food supply chain state that they have difficulties in covering additional costs associated with voluntary measures for a more environmental and climate friendly food production. Reasons given are that consumers cannot make well-informed choices and that the benefits are largely collective. The government may therefore need to support such production methods. However, it is important that agricultural production is guided by consumer choices.
In this project, we investigate whether and how the government can support private initiatives for a more sustainable food production, especially when there are established market solutions (e.g. certifications and labels) that are intended to signal this added value to consumers. The project will be completed in 2025.
