Effects of eco-certification

Eco-certification is a way for producers to differentiate their products and show buyers that the products sold are sustainable. Certification often comes at a cost for producers which means that some form of return from certification is important in order for it to pay to get certified. If eco-certification is not advantageous for producers, few will join and the environmental effects of certification will be limited.

In this project we analyse benefits of eco-certification at producer level. More specifically, we aim to investigate how Swedish Norwegian lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) fishermen in Kattegat and Skagerrak were affected by the introduction of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification in the 2015-2017 period. Using econometric methods and detailed daily data from logbooks we will estimate the effect of MSC -certification on dock prices, quantities sold and the number of buyers.

The project is financed by Formas and will be completed in 2021.
